Halfway to Spring - Feb. 2, 2025

Well, it's Groundhog Day again; we are officially at the approximate halfway point of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

This time of year coincides with several holidays, both religious and secular, and many are filled with the anticipation of spring's eventual arrival. These holidays include: St. Brigid's Day, Candlemas, Imbolic, and Groundhog Day.

In December 2022, I visited St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City and took photos of their St. Brigid of Kildare statue. Since St. Brigid's day is February 1st, I have decided to share one of my photos from that trip.
I removed the saturation from the photo to emphasize its highlights and shadows. The light is strategically placed above St. Brigid so it looks like she is staring directly at the light source. The shadow behind her hides all identifying features of the Cathedral and consequently directs your attention to St. Brigid's gaze. The placement of St. Brigid's hand over her heart makes her appear soft and gentle, especially in the presence of the unidentified light source. Whatever the light is, whether it be God, the sun, or heaven, St. Brigid appears to be in awe of it.

Just as St. Brigid looks towards the light, so too does the Northern Hemisphere. The Northern Hemisphere is coming out from the darkest days and hurdling towards brighter and longer days.

Spring will be here soon.

(However, according to Punxsutawney Phil, we'll have to go through six more weeks of winter first. To be fair though, his predictions have only been accurate about 38% of the time as of 2025.)
