Crocuses: Flowers of Hope and Resilience

Crocuses on March 22, 2025

On March 22, 2025, I went on my first photo shoot in over a month. It was a sunny, spring day, and I  noticed a couple of small, familiar purple patches. I skipped to the patch with my trusty camera at hand with excitement in my heart. I was on my way to take my annual photos of crocuses.

Crocuses traditionally come in three colors: white, purple, and yellow. They are among the first flowers to bloom in the spring, and they represent the change in seasons. Lately, I've been thinking about how resilient these little flowers are.

In order for these flowers to successfully bloom at winter's end, the crocus must be prepared to endure drastic and unexpected changes in their environment. As winter fades into spring, the weather can shift from snowy one day to sunny and unusually warm. The crocus does not let the unpredictability of their surroundings impede their ability to make their anticipated return. Their dependability as annuals is a testament to their strength, for it is not always to remain consistent. Somehow, someway, these flowers always reappear in tandem with the arrival of spring.

Crocuses are small and are only in bloom for a short period of time, but they are mighty. No matter how harsh the winter, we can depend on the crocus to herald the beginning of spring.

Perhaps there is something we can learn from crocuses. Their resilience, especially in the face of adversity, is admirable. The crocus gives me hope for this reason. I hope for brighter days and for the strength to persevere through challenging times.
